HOW TO CHOOSE A CARE HOME
by Sheila Scott, Chief Executive,
National Care Association
When looking for a care home for yourself or a resident
it is extremely important that you look at more than one
home so that you have some idea of the wide variety of
homes that are available. The second and perhaps most
important thing is to be sure that home is able to provide
the level of care that you or your relative needs. There are
several categories including elderly, dementia care and
nursing care. The Care Quality Commission is responsible
for the registering and inspection of all care homes in
England. You can obtain a copy of the latest inspection
report either from the Care Quality Commission or from
the individual care homes or via the internet
(http://www.cqc.org.uk/).
The sorts of information that you might look for from
what is always a very weighty document are:
are staff adequately trained?
is the home easily accessible?
is appropriate equipment available?
can your food and dietary needs be met?
is there some form of social life or activities within the
home?
Nothing though can take the place of visiting the home
itself. You can learn so much at the home and by talking
to staff and to residents and their families about life in the
home.
One of the great strengths of care in England is the wide
variety of types of home available. There are large homes,
small homes, homes that are like hotels and homes that
are like family living.
There is something to suit everyone so it is essential that
as this very important decision is made you take a little
time to be sure that the decision is the right one.
